The complex world of electric mobility scooters
Posted on: September 15, 2011
A mobility scooter has a seat over two, three or four wheels. A flat area or foot plates for the feet, and handlebars in front to turn one or two steerable wheels. The seat may swivel to allow access when the front is blocked by the handlebars. Mobility scooters are usually battery powered with one or two batteries that are stored on board the scooter and is charged via an onboard or offboard battery charging unit via a conventional electric wall outlet. Gasoline-powered mobility scooters are also available in some third world countries, though they are rapidly being replaced by electric models.
The tiller comes with a console, the console contains a throttle with a lever for forward/reverse operations. The console also contains the speed controls, which more often then not is shown with the diagram of a turtle for slow and a hare for fast. Most mobility scooters have a max range of speed of 3.5 mph. This speed was adopted because of the speed restrictions that Theme Parks such as Disney World and Universal Studios put in place. is the steering column centrally located at the front of the scooter. There are two types of mobility scooters: front-wheel drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD). The FWD is usually a travel scooter that folds up rather easily, FWD scooters are not known for their comfort, durability or battery life they are know for their ease of transporting. RWD's are known for its battery longevity, durability and comfortable ride. Most FWD electric mobility scooters come with only one battery while RWD electric scooter's often come with two batteries. A rider's weight capacity depends on the type of mobility scooter. A FWD scooter wouldn't be able to support as much weight as a RWD scooter. For example most FWD scooters have a max weight capacity of 200 lbs while RWD scooters can come with a weight capacity of up to 600 lbs.
Two wheel electric scooters are the newest scooters on the scene. These electric scooters became very trendy and are primarily used by young adults who are not hindered by a disability. Two wheel scooters are not as stable as three and four wheel scooters which reflect their low sales volume. Three wheel scooters are by far the most popular scooter by consumers which reflects it high sales volume. Three wheel scooters have the best turning radius of all electric mobility scooters. The Pride Revo which is known for it's 38' turning radius is one of the most requested electric scooter rentals in Disney World. Four wheel scooters are often recommended for persons who exceed 400 lbs. These scooters offer the stability needed for the constant shifting of the weight of it's rider. The turning radius of four wheel scooters are by far the worst of all bi, tri and quad electric scooters. But it's a small trade off for the stability needed to accomodate it's passenger.
