Electric Scooters & Motorcycles - Safety Tips

Posted on: October 6, 2011

Electric motorcycles and scooters are vehicles with two, three or four wheels that use electric motors to attain locomotion. Electric motorcycles as distinguished from scooters do not have a step-through frame. Increasingly accepted as capable, even appealing, forms of transportation, particularly in densely populated urban areas, electric two-wheel vehicles are a category that includes electric bicycles, electric kick scooters, electric motorcycles, and electric scooters.

Accidents involving electric scooters are on the rise with two wheel electric scooters leading the pack. Not all electric scooters calls for the use of helmets, but I feel that helmets are a must have to operate two wheel electric scooters. Wearing a helmet using a three or four wheel scooter is optional because of the increased stablility with the addition of the extra wheels. Also wearing bright or reflective clothing while operating the scooter at night would be helpful for other drivers to see you so that they could maintain a safe distance. You should never drive in another drivers blind spot, this is unsafe and could result in a accident. Signaling well before you make a turn or lane change is a great idea, your size and maneuverability can surprise other motorists. Consider using hand signals in addition to your electric turn signals.

Drivers should always keep both hands on the handlebars and both feet on the floorboards while riding. Don't let other motorists surprise you, use extra caution at intersections, parking lot entrances, exits and driveways. Reducing your speed when maneuvering over bumpy roads, streets are helpful. Avoid hitting road hazards such as sharp bumps and holes in the road surface. These hazards can result in a loss of control and or damage to your scooter. Be especially conscious of traffic from behind. You should be attentive of the drastic difference of speed between your scooter and other motor vehicles. Use caution and check your mirrors and look to the left or right frequently every 5-10 seconds.

Hopefully these safety tips will help you maintain an injury-free scooter experience. For more choices of electric scooters in the Orlando, Florida area please visit Scooterama! Scootarama specializes in electric scooter rentals and sales for use in Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World.
